Holdings
The record-holdings of the Regional Archives of Ambala Division are as under:-
1.
Public Records---This office has acquired the records of the English
Record Room of the Deputy
Commissioner Office, Ambala. These are
mostly files and pertain to the old Ambala
District. These files start from 1883-84 to 1955-56. These records deal with Executive Agency, Revenue Settlements,
Boundary and Territorial Adjustments between the Government and the Local Chiefs;
Land Record System, Acquisition of Land for public purposes, Jagir Pensions, Irrigation,
Forests, Acquisition of Land for Railways- Delhi Ambala Kalka Railways ,Management
of Court of Wards, Darbars, Home, Defence, Rural Reconstruction Programmes, Press,
Fairs and Festivals, Electricity and Industry, Agriculture & Marketing, Trade
and Commerce, Judiciary, Jail and Criminal Administration, etc. There are 3400 files
on the above mentioned subjects and the Local
Bodies Records pertain to the District Boards, Municipalities and Panchayats.
These deal with the administration of Local Self Government. These records were
acquired from the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ambala, starting from 1898
to 1955-56. These are approximately 1600 files.

Private
Collection:- Late Shri Ganpat Rai, freedom fighter, Mahesh Nagar Ambala
Cantt., donated his private collection
to this office, which include some
magazines, news-papers clippings and some books, etc. The newspaper clippings mostly
pertain to the political atmosphere of the country from 1937-1946. There is some
literature on I.N.A. also. There is some correspondence of Dr. Gopi Chand Bhargava,
President, Punjab Congress Assembly Committee, with the All India Parliamentary
Committee viz. Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, Abul Kalam Azad, J.B. Kirplani, Sardar Patel
and G.B.Pant, etc. (1937-38), and his correspondence
regarding Ministerial affairs
1949-50; papers relating to All India Khadi Board and Gram Udyog Sangh 1957-61;
papers relating to Hindi Agitation in Punjab and the Problems of Refugees’ Rehabilitation,
etc. In addition to these there are some magazines and newspapers
such as People’s War Magazine
1943,
Calcutta
; and The Listener.

Manuscripts:-
This office has acquired Manuscripts from Pandit Upender Dutt Chakrapani Panda,
Sarsvati Tirth , Pehowa (Kurukshetra
). There are more than 400 granths
in manuscript form- 1765 to 1883; and 60
granths in printed form
– 1890-1907. These mainly relate to the six Darshans
of the Indian Philosophy and also pertain to the vadic culture. These also
include Ramayana, Mahabharata and also commentaries on Geeta, Vedas, Upnishads etc.
The language of these granths is Sanskrit

Urdu Records:-
This office also houses the Urdu records/ books
which include Dewani Records of Karnal district (1809-1861). These are 1624
volumes which deal with the revenue cases of villages. In addition to the above
there are more than 1500 books in Urdu on various topics.
